London based companies Orange (mobile phones) and Gotwind (renewable energy) teamed up to produce a charger that is powered by movement alone, the specific movement they have in mind… dancing!

This kinetic energy charger will go for a test run at the Glastonbury Festival, which is the largest greenfield music and arts celebration. It will be held in Somerset, Friday.

I could not find a picture of the device but it’s said to be about the size of a cell phone and weight as much as a deck of cards. It is filled with metal weights and magnets which when shuffled around create a charge that is held. This is very similar to the flashlights that you have to shake for 30 seconds to recharge. Great application and expansion on an already popular technology.

What a great idea! Dance and movement are excellent means of communicating emotion and story. Now that dance and movement will power our cell phones, we can see another way in which dance is a means of communication.
