Is it still a topic? I still find people talking about it at the local coffee shop. With the death blow to Windows XP, many people have found it difficult to deal with the loss of their favorite OS. It took some time to understand, but the loss of Xp is comparable to the loss of a loved one. Here are the steps we are going through.

Denial and Isolation

Yes, consumer demand was helpful in extending the life of XP. In the end, there is nothing that we could do for XP. XP was allowed service pack after service pack, people even modded XP to allow for directx10. Now we have to deal with the fact that Xp is no longer with us. My isolation phase was with Suse and Ubuntu Linux, both great experiences, but I had to move past that.

Anger

I blogged. Everyone blogged. The drivers didn't work so we were supposed to smash our scanners, printers, and our digital cameras. Microsoft told us to just wait because maybe, drivers would come out for our hardware. MAYBE DRIVERS WILL BE DEVELOPED!! This was unacceptable. We were all very angry, and that phase took a while to get through.

Bargaining

We all asked in whiny voices "Can I get XP on my Dell XPS." "How about I just use my old Xp and you just sell me a computer that is completely blank." The distributors also whined to Microsoft, and there was some leeway. But even with all of the idea storms, something has to give. It was inevitable that sooner or later, we would have to ?upgrade? :(

Depression

We cried and cried. We remembered the old logos. The old loading screens. We remember the slack security features that are replaced by the paranoid messages of Vista. We remember 1 XP, not XP "Ultimate", not XP "basic", not XP "low-fat double loading time add whip with a Sidebar". There is nothing we could do but cry.

Acceptance

We find solace in the fact that the death of XP was dignified. So many people tried to keep it alive. Yet, in the end, nothing will be done to quell the disappearance of XP from our lives. XP will live forever in our hearts. I know you are in a better place now XP.
