Blackberry: Phone Or Pda?
Author: Simon Drew

If you have a Blackberry, do you get a mobile phone, a personal digital assistant, or a portable personal computer? The Blackberry is actually all of the above mentioned device. It is a multi-purpose handheld device that is capable of multiple tasks.
Blackberry is a creation of Research in Motion (RIM), a solutions provider and telecommunications product manufacturer based in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. Today a Blackberry is known as a smart phone in the league of the iPhone and other touch screen phones provided by various mobile phone manufacturers as Samsung, LG, Motorola and many others.
However, a Blackberry was not always a phone. It was actually a mobile email device and a personal digital assistant with calendar, address lists and similar function. It evolved into a multi-purpose handheld device. The present Blackberry in addition to being a mobile phone has web browsing, email and PDA capabilities and is useful for people from many walks of life.
This all started in 1999 when RIM came up with a handheld email device. It was a small gadget that resembled a pager and was designed for business people who needs a mobile wireless email communications for its operations. This piece of electronic miracle also has a calendar and organizer and an address list. This became very popular among businesses and corporations and the gadget became a vital part of many marketing teams of many businesses.
Until 2002, this device has no name and is primarily used exclusively by businesses with field representatives and employees who are not office based and needs wireless email to keep in touch with their headquarters. Realizing the potential of such device if it goes beyond the walls of these corporate operations, RIM hired Lexicon Branding to give the device a name.
RIM wanted to have the word email in the device but it was not endorsed by the branding experts who feel that the act of emailing is usually associated with stress. The name is said to be inspired by how the device at that time. Because it was black and the small keys in front resembled seed, the team ran the gamut of fruits and vegetables that have seeds, and finally settled on the name Blackberry. A nice pick actually as I cannot imagine calling my PDA a squash or a banana.
The Blackberry then and now is designed with a complete QWERTY keyboard, similar to what one sees on a computer keyboard. This gives the users the capability to type quickly using on the thumb. Several evolutions after, the Blackberry comes with improved memory, clearer displays, more storage capacities and luxurious designs. RIM also partnered with Intel to create powerful and suitable processors for this multi ? purpose device.
Still confused with what to call your Blackberry? You can call it with any name you want, even those ridiculous nicknames that people have given to the device. I am thinking though that President Barack Obama may call his a PDA ? Presidential Digital Assistant.
